Shiny Glowing Spring Raindrops

23 Mar

It’s Spring!

2013-03-19 11.36.14Of course, here in Singapore it’s almost ever summer. But we can dream, we can imagine, we can pretend, can’t we? Even if it’s just for a brief moment, a glimmer of colour, a pastel raindrop. We can share the rest of the world’s joy, sorrow and in slightly more than a weeks’ time, the pain and glory of Jesus Christ.

Easter indicates a glorious spring, but it also points to something so much more important. Something so painful it’s rectification is so beautiful.

We are preparing to grief together with Christians worldwide. And then to dance and Rejoice with abandon.

Our thoughts are feelings are reflected in these new brooches ($29 and $33) at shupg. Where birds, owls, and raindrops are set free and look up into the clouds, into the skies, into Heaven.

Have a thoughtful Holy week and a joyful Easter weekend!

Summer fling

6 Aug

Hand drawn map of Finland by kzieglerdesign on etsy

No no, I’m not talking about a summer romance here, though who hasn’t had one of those eh? 😉

I’m heading to far-flung Scandinavia for a summer chamber music course. Can’t wait! The practising has been crazy, but well worth it. It’s easy to get caught up with the weekly teaching routines and everyday mundane tasks…. so filling up the creativity tank and to be able to work with and learn from other peers is even more crucial as time goes by.

Don’t get me wrong, there are always things to appreciate, even in the way a leaf grows, fur off the back of a dog’s ear gently moving in the wind, a student’s rude comeback, an hour struggling with a mental block,… but there is a time for everything.

A time to stop and watch.
A time to pick up pace and take yourself by the scruff of your neck just up and do it.
A time appreciate all the people God has put around you (actually the last one we need to do more of but probably spend the least time doing!)

I pray that I will be able to do all 3 this summer!

Lord, please give me strength, to be forgiving, appreciative, thankful, accepting … and it doesn’t help to be constantly curious and quietly amused.

Teatime with new and old friends? I hope to be able to take some time to do that of course.

A cup of warm tea on a not-so-warm summer day (let’s face it, summer anywhere else is at least a cool spring day by Singapore’s scorching standards!). I’m partial to green tea, what’s your poison? 🙂

First teatime brooch, inspired by a talented friend
and tea-blogger at
tealadymel.

What colours will I see? What people will I meet? All of God’s creations laid out in 14 hours of sunlight, with still lakes to listen to, and green grass to roll in.

Let’s see what shupg will be up to in Finland, shall we?

And at the same time, wishing all my Singaporean friends a wonderful National Day and my muslim friends, Selamat Hari Raya!

Never knew drawing, cutting, sewing could be this back-breaking!

26 Jun
Phew, have been out of action in the online sphere for the past couple of weks… but for a good reason.
Am thankful for an order from a close friend, for her companies’ event (Go iProperty.com!).
Step 1: Drawing (now I know what all that practice of colouring inside the lines during in nursery school is for!)
Step 2: Cutting
Step 3: Glazing
Step 4: Gluing… and more gluing
Step 5: Ironing the pleats
Step 6: Sewing
Step 7: Sticking on the blue ribbon backing
Step 8: Cutting & sticking on the felt backing
Step 9: Rooting out the duds (which means, making a good 40% more replacements!)
Round Blue Ribbon reminiscent of school days 🙂
Trays & trays of them filling up my tiny room, drying out & waiting to be glued
These are the No. 1 ones. Cool design by the client.
A little fella came to visit…. or rather, be a kay-poh (Singaporean slang for ‘busybody’).

A little colour-coded helper!
2 days to the event & a good deal more to do! Aaaarrghh!
Sewing 65 pleated ribbon rings by hand. Neck’s stiff as cardboard!
All done! These are just the round ones. There were 200 more No. 1 badges. I’m panting harder than my dog! Woof!
Tired?
I know exactly how you feel!
But it all made for a good time around the dining table as the mom came in to help. We had a number of good chats in this time.
Who said artists and tradespeople have it easy?
Now after 265 specially customised brooches (or as same call it, badges or name tags) are done, it’s wheeeee!

Raindrops on noses

24 Apr

As a kid, I used to watch Sound of Music every time I had a chance to. Before there were laser discs or LDs (yes, those HUGE vinyl pieces) I caught them on TV every time they were screened (which was like twice a year during long weekends with public holidays). And then I made my parents borrow the LDs every fortnight. Then I recorded them on VHS and watched them every time I felt sad or a little nostalgic. Well, of course now they are readily available on DVD but I’ve yet to secure a copy… maybe because it’s embedded in my mind so firmly I don’t need visual reminders anymore :p. It helps to have visited that long tree-shaded gazebo in Salzburg where they filmed the many lovely scenes.

Raindrops on noses ….. ah….. an unforgettable tune.

Black raindrops come from white clouds… or do they?
This elephant loves raindrops, especially those which brings with them a star.

Bring a snazzy jazzy black brolly, though it doesn’t look like rain. For now.

a tiny stand

30 Mar
I don’t like conflict, and neither do I like to shout or make too loud a point.
But I do make my stand known. Just as silently and as subtly as I can. These little messages are meant to be taken with a massive pinch of self-humour. They’re more like conversation starters than anything else. If you’re shy like me you’ll know what I’m talking about. I always say actions and actual work speak louder than words (spoken ones that is, the written word is so beautiful).

If you don’t want it to say “Don’t mess with the” I can always take them out.
These are entirely customisable so if there’s a message you’d like to communicate, please just type that into the “Your personalised text here” field just before you click the Add-to-Cart button below.
And remember they are available as:
 • Brooches – SGD$20
 • Necklaces – SGD$24
 • Hairpins – SGD$12 (1/2 the size)
Available as Brooches (SGD$20), Necklaces (SGD$24) or Hairpins (SGD$12 – about 1/2 the size)

More to come soon. In the meantime, have fun folks! 🙂

Seek Ye First

21 Mar
Awoke this morning with these 3 words ringing in my ears again: Seek Ye First.
Seek – what attitude do I have when I come before the Almighty? Am I too casual? Yes He is a friend, but He is also to be revered and worshiped. Am I seeking or do I take Him for granted. Prayer is a privilege, not a burden, nor a tool.
Ye – Who or What do I seek? Treasures of this earth that will be eaten by moths or die away? Even my physical body or gifts I think I am blessed with… these are nothing compared to His glory. To Him.
First – What are my priorities? Is it Him or is it something else or someone else. First, not second, not later. Now and First.
Faith is a seemingly obscure element, much like the word “Believe”, but it can grow. How do you nurture it? From a mustard seed, a tree can grow. Have faith in your faith, and water it well.
Mustard Seed of Faith Brooch – $24.

Lovingly made of wooden branch sections and a bit of plastic.

“I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
– Matthew 17:20
